‘Thwack’. The bullet hits the doorframe just above Jack’s left hand as he leans on the jamb. It’s dark and raining. Inside the house is dark also. With no time to consider he hits the partially open door with his right hand, flinging it wide and pitches forward, somersaulting onto the thick hall runner carpet. Jack knows this house well. He rolls again, now to the right then springs to his feet and rushes headlong toward the foot of the staircase which hugs the wall to his left. He needs to find higher ground. With his left hand on the stair rail, he bounds up the deeply carpeted stairs, two at a time. On the top landing he pauses, listening, for footsteps or a sound which may indicate a chase. An ominous clap of rumbling thunder. Another flash, more thunder, directly above the house.
It felt as if the ground shook or the house were about to explode.
And then it did.
